Digital Agenda : the EU Commission favors obscurantism over an innovative and open Information Society

Paris, May 17th, 2010.

On Tuesday, May 18th, the European Commission should publish its digital agenda. In its latest draft published, « open standards », which are the only way to ensure real interoperability, were excluded from the digital and political landscape in Europe. April is calling for action on promoting an open and innovative information society.

Support open standards in the Digital agenda

Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner in charge of Digital Strategy (and former European Commissioner for Competition), is currently drafting the agenda for Europe's digital policy. Neelie Kroes suffers pressure through the Directorate General Company to remove open standards and interoperability concepts from the agenda.

European Commission on ACTA: The Great Escape

Members of Act Up-Paris and La Quadrature du Net attended this morning a « stakeholders meeting » on ACTA hosted by the European Commission. Questions asked by the public faced a wall of condescendence and disdain. Luc Devigne’s answers did not reassure us. On the contrary, they strenghtened Act Up-Paris, April and La Quadrature’s concerns that ACTA could endanger access to medicine, Free Software and freedom of expression on the Net, while circumventing democratic processes.

HADOPI - towards endoctrination of children at school

In a recent press release entitled HADOPI - proprietary propaganda at school? April showed its concern regarding an article suggesting setbacks in the educational and commercial neutrality of school.

Such fears were relevant since the Parliament rejected on Thursday the 2nd of April 2009 an amendment of sheer common sense proposed by the GDR Member of Parliament Martine Billard who wanted to balance the article by presenting also the legal distribution of contents and works under open or free licenses.

Statement of April on the question of software patents

As mentioned in April's 2008 retrospective, the president of the European Patent Office (EPO), Alison Brimelow, submitted a questionnaire to the Enlarged Board of Appeal (EBoA), the office's highest jurisdiction, on the 24th of October 2008 aiming to fix the limit of what can be patentable in the domain of software. With help from FFII, April took this opportunity to submit an <em>amicus curiæ</em> brief to the EBoA, to express April's position on software patents, and thus contribute so that the decision of the senior civil servants in the EPO can take into account the opinion of those opposed to software patents

London, UK - Friday May 22, 2009 - The Free Software Pact initiative calls upon UK citizens and MEP candidates to stand up for the principles of a free society by backing free software in the upcoming European Parliament elections on June 4, 2009.

Beyond usual political divisions, debates on the DADVSI bill have been the opportunity of getting many members of the parliament together around a common idea: Free Software is an opportunity and a major asset for our country and it must be protected. On this issue, the groundwork April has made amongst MPs from all political sides contributed filling a gap in our representatives' knowledge of software law, and allowed for the fundamental issues of interoperability, open standards and Free Software to be discussed within the parliament.

Bundled selling of software with computers: a first step towards ending this problem for consumers

April is pleased by the conviction of the Darty chain of electronics stores for not complying with French consumer protection regulations. This conviction is a major milestone for consumers, and also for competition in the market of software for the general public.
